Filth & Wisdom, and Kill Your Idols (Eugene Hutz)

I saw Filth & Wisdom yesterday at the IFC Center on 6th ave in Manhattan. (Thanks OFS staff + board for the membership!) It was directed, produced, and co-written by Madonna, and is receiving generally good reviews. It has a sort of classic romantic comedy structure, albeit a bit perverse. I enjoyed it. The star is Eugene Hutz, singer for Gogol Bordello. He is also the standout in the film Kill Your Idols, that I saw last week on a limited stream at pitchfork.com. Kill Your Idols compared the New York no wave scene of the late seventies, to the indie/ underground scene in NY in 2002. It was sortof a sad comparision, with the likes of Lydia Lunch (looking like a real human) berating the newcomers as being empty, and bearing no message. With the exception of a limp (stoned?) interview with Black Dice, Hutz is the only engaging one of the new lot.
